Roger Newell, President

Campaign Communications Specialist, International Brotherhood of Teamsters

A graduate of DC Public Schools, Mr. Newell is an award winning education and labor journalist and community activist. He currently serves as an internal and external communications specialist with the 1.4 million-member Teamsters Union, working with public sector workers, including thousands employed by school districts, such as the District of Columbia.

Mildred Musgrove, Secretary

Retired DC Public Schools Educator & Administrator

Most recently, Ms. Musgrove was Principal of Anacostia Senior High School in Washington, DC. Prior to her position there, Ms. Musgrove held several other positions within DCPS, including Chief Academic Officer, Chief of Staff for the Superintendent, Lead Principal (Assistant Superintendent), Principal of West Elementary School, Instructional Supervisor, and Senior High School English teacher.

Tom Hutton, Interim Treasurer

Staff Attorney, National School Boards Association, Washington, DC

Mr. Hutton conducts amicus curiae advocacy and develops preventive legal strategies and school law resources for school boards and the over 3,000 members of NSBA's Council of School Attorneys. He is also editor of NSBA's free weekly Legal Clips e-newsletter and co-editor of Leadership Insider, the school law and policy newsletter for NSBA affiliated school districts. Prior to joining NSBA, he practiced housing and community development and non-profit law in the Washington, D.C. offices of Powell, Goldstein LLP.

Mary Filardo

Executive Director, 21st Century School Fund, Washington, DC

Ms. Filardo is the founder and executive director of the 21st Century School Fund, providing leadership, innovative financing solutions, research, and public policy analysis of school facility issues. Before founding 21CSF, she worked for 25 years in the private sector in building and construction management. She has been an active parent volunteer in the sixteen years her children have been in public school.

Barbara Somson

Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs, United Auto Workers, Washington, DC

Representing the interests of union workers across the country, Ms. Somson regularly works with leading national decision-makers on a variety of issues. Ms. Somson has children in the public school system, is a parent and community activist and worked on District legislative affairs as part of District of Columbia City Council member Kathy Patterson's staff before becoming joining the UAW.
