Innovation
21CSF initiates and participates in facility planning, management and finance innovation. A few of our projects from the past 17 years includes:
- Developed a digital information wall, "Window on Anacostia" , in the street-front windows at the new Savoy and TMA Sports and Learning Center on MLK Jr. Avenue SE in Washington, D.C. (2010 to 2011)
- Developed a Joint-Use cost calculator for school facilities that identifies the elements of school district facility costs, calculates a per square foot cost of ownership and proposes various scenarios for cost recovery, so school districts can knowingly subsidize broader community use, or secure the other public or private funds needed to support intensive community use. The calculator was piloted in the San Francisco Unified School District. (2009-2010)
- 21CSF partnered with Savoy Elementary School and Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter High School (TMA) to manage a joint development of a shared gym that includes “street-front” display windows for school and community use between TMA, Savoy ES, and the DC Department of Recreation. (2006 to 2007)
- With Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter High School (TMA), 21CSF provided support in obtaining governmental approvals and financing to modernize and expand a 100 year old school building in partnership with the District Government. (2004 to 2005)
- Facilitated the opening of the new Oyster Bilingual Elementary School, the result of DCPS' first public/private partnership. (2001)
- Developed DC School Search, a software interface that utilizes facility data, student and teacher demographics, and student performance to connect neighborhoods with their schools. (launched in 1999)
- Developed FORMAT- Pro, decision-support software for PK-12 educational facility planning. FORMAT-Pro® enables school districts to incorporate key data points related to education, environment, and community goals and objectives into their educational facility master and capital plans. FORMAT-Pro has been piloted by Oregon school districts and used for facilities analysis on school districts in California, Chicago, New York, and North Carolina and Washington, D.C. (1998 to current)
