Accountability Accountability for public school facilities involves facility standards, assessments, and reporting on the health, safety, education, utilities, and other factors associated with buildings and grounds. It involves systems for measuring and communicating conditions, as well as the authority to encourage or enforce changes in school design, construction, operations, and maintenance. States vary widely in their approaches, but most set at least some standards for school facilities and establish mechanisms to ensure those standards are met locally.
When internal controls and external oversight are in place for public school facilities, districts can better manage and balance private and public interests. When facilities are a part of education accountability, then decisions about facility maintenance and operations are better informed.
